Please allow me to introduce myself. I’m Rob Kopp, one of themembers of Platenclub Utrecht, a club of friends around Utrecht who are not only collecting records, but who are also releasing them on our own PLUT label. All our records contain previously unreleased Nederbeat from the 60’s. So far we have released vinyl singles and EP’s (always 500 copies) by The Rhythms, Peter & The Blizzards, Group $oall, The Zipps, The Golden Earrings (not to be found), Don Devil & The Drifters, The Needles, The Stylets, Les Mystères (feat. Mariska Veres), The Wo?w, The Vaunts and The Fallouts. Our next record PLUT 013, an EP by The Flingelbunts, will be released in November. I’m also a big Kinks fan and responsible for the list of more than 10.000 Kinks covers on kindakinks.net/discography/kinkskovers.php. After 2 books ‘Down all the days (till 1992)’about The Kinks and ‘Take him for what he’s worth’ about American singer songwriter P.F. Sloan, I compiled PLATENBOEK, a pop encyclopaedia of more than 1000 pages in 3 volumesabout Dutch popmusic in the 50’s and 60’s. Volume 1 and 2 (the green book and the red book) were published in 2011, volume 3 (the yellow book) in 2016. They’re generally considered to be THE successor of popencyclopaedia NEDERPOP from 1982. José didn’t know about the Platenclub Utrecht and PLATENBOEK when he asked me if I wanted to compile ‘60 Dutch Nuggets’, the fifth countryin his series ‘60 Nuggets’ after Spain, Greece, Argentina and France, but I think he picked the right person :-) At the moment I’m busy with volume 4 (the purple book) about the 60’s after the 60’s, with bands from after the 60’s (1970-2020) who are influenced by the 60’s (Kliek, Kek ‘66, Kik and all the records on the KELT label, just to name a couple of K-entry’s), but it will take a couple of years before I’m ready. Meanwhile PLUT-member Hans Evers has compiled HOEZENBOEK, two books (the blue book and the orange book) with several series of Dutch sleeves. For more info seewww.platenclubutrecht.nl.

After this introduction, let’s have a look at ‘60 Dutch Nuggets’.

How do you pick only 60 songs out of thousands of candidates? I have all the songs from The Netherlandsthat were recorded in the 60’s (country code = NL and year < 1970) that I like, and that’s purely a matter of taste, in iTunes. That are 1.234 songs. I hadgraded all thosesongs with 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 stars: 848 *, 282 **, 53 ***, 38 **** and13 *****. That leaves 104 records with 3 or more stars. I decided that every artist could only have 1 song on ‘60 Dutch Nuggets’, but the big 4 Golden Earrings, Motions, Outsiders and Q65 could have 2 songs. In that way 36 songs fell off, including 10 songs that otherwise would have reached the final 60: 3 songs with 5 stars (Cuby + Blizzards – Window of my eyes and Q65 - The life I live + Down in the bottom) and 7 songs with 4 stars (Golden Earrings: Smoking cigarettes + Just a little bit of piece in my heart, Boudewijn de Groot: Verdronken vlinder, Rob Hoeke R&B Group – Drinking on my bed, Outsiders – Touch and Q65 – I despise you + World of birds). So Q65 had 6 songs with 4 or 5 stars, but ‘60 Dutch Nuggets’ only contains 2 of them. Still having 68 songs, I decided to drop 5 songs in Dutch where the song text is more important than the music, 2 instrumentals and 1 song by an American singer who recorded that song with Dutch band The Hunters. In case you like to listen to these 8 songs anyway:Armand – Want er is niemand ****, Boudewijn de Groot – Testament *****, Boudewijn de Groot & Elly Nieman – Prikkebeen ****, José – Als jeallekrantenleest ***, LiesbethList & Ramses Shaffy – Pastorale ****, Crazy Casey – Comin’ home baby ****, Pacifics –Bust out *** and Peggy March – Too long away ***. Finally having 60 songs, I decided to consult the other members of Platenclub Utrecht. From their numerous suggestions (how on earth can you forget that one!) I picked The Stylets – Come to me and The Sound Magics – Don’t you remember and dropped Triks & The Paramounts – Doe maar net zoals ik (another song sung in Dutch) and The Peps – Foolish day.

I decided to put the 30 songs that had the biggest 1966-feel for me (jangling guitars, baroquesound) on CD2 and the other 30 on CD1.All the songs on CD1 and CD2 are ordered per year and within a year in alphabetical order of the artist (family name), with a few exceptions. On CD1 track 1 is the worst song on this compilation (so we have had that one right away), track 2is the first song that reached the Top 40 and tracks 29 and 30 are turned around (CD1 is just too long for a CD, so when you like to burn CD1, you have to take the short version of track 30 with just the end). CD2 starts with my personal favourite (and of blog owner José!).

CD1

01 Golden Earrings – Not to find (2A =2nd single a-side 1965 ***)

Band from Den Haag, beat stad nr. 1 (The Hague, beat town no. 1).

‘Lonely every day’ was withdrawn as soon as they found outthe b-side grammatically should have been‘Not to be found’. Nowadays the single is worth around 2.000 euro, which makes it the holy grail of Nederbeat.

02 Motions – It’s gone (1A 1965 ****)

Also from The Hague. The Golden Earrings were for girls, The Motions for boys. ‘It’s gone’ was the first single by a Dutch Nederbeat band that reached the Veronica Top 40 (10th of April 1965, 1 week, position 39).
In 1967 Robbie van Leeuwen left to form Shocking Blue.

03 Entertainers – Down home girl (2A 1965 ****)

Band from Heerlen, province Limburg. The 2ndversion of ‘Down home girl’ on their 2nd single is much better than the 1stversion on their 1st single (see picture to the right). The original (o) is by Alvin Robinson (1964).

04 Het – Ik heb geen zin om op te staan (1A 1965 ***)

Pop art band from Amsterdam. In English ‘I don’t want to get up’. Het = It, inspired by names like Them and Who. To promote this singletheyput a bed on wheels on the Dam in Amsterdam, caused a traffic jam, were arrested and reached the news nationwide. Mission succeeded.

05 Cuby + Blizzards – Your body, not your soul (2B 1966 ****)

Blues band from Grollo, province Drenthe. This is the best Dutch bluesband. In 1967 they accompanied Van Morrison on a Dutch Them-tour of 8 concerts in 3 days (!).Another (even better?) song by C+B is ‘Window of my eyes’ (12A *****).

06 Linda van Dyck + Boo & Boo Boo’s – Stengun (1A 1966 ****)

Amsterdam. One of the 3 real Dutch beat girls, together with Jenny Streur (see track 10 of CD1) and Trix Boelen of Triks & The Paramounts (in the end dropped from this compilation). After this single Linda had 3 solo singles and then became a famous actress.

07 Rob Hoeke R&B Group – When people talk (3B 1966 ****)

Band from Haarlem, province Noord-Holland, with an important role for the piano of Rob Hoeke. Other great songs: Margio (2A ***), Rain, snow, misery (3A ***) and Drinking on my bed (7A ****). Instrumental records were released as Rob Hoeke Boogie Woogie Quartet.

08 Humbugs – A little bit time(1B 1966 ***)

Band from Almelo, province Overijssel. ‘Go on home, little girl’ is also a great song (1A ***). The majority of the 200 copies of the single were sold in the first week after the release, so the record went to #1 in the local hit parade.

09 Hunters – Russian spy and I (3A 1966 ****)

Band from Amsterdam. This song has become a classic because of the fabulous guitar of Jan Akkerman (later in Brainbox and Focus). They also accompanied Peggy March on her 1966-single ‘Too long away’ (***).

10 Jenny & The Rascals – You told me a lie (1A 1966 ***)

Band from The Hague. Brian Epstein should have invited Dutch beat girl Jenny Streur to come to England to form a girl group as female counterpart of The Beatles, but she refused. Her nickname was:
de vrouwelijke (=the female) Van Morrison.

11 Johnny Kendall & The Heralds – Girl (10A 1966 *****)

Band from Amsterdam. One of the first Dutch beat groups, formed in 1963 when Hans Donkerkaat a.k.a. Johnny Kendall joined Les Sylvains.

12 Maskers – Three's a crowd (4A 1966 ****)

Band from Amsterdam. When ZZ & The Maskers toured in the UK, Jan de Hont offered his equipment to Jeff Beck because he thought his was broken. He had never heard feedback before. Back home heimmediately used it on ‘Three’s a crowd’ and in 1968 again on ‘Death!!!’ (15B ***).

13 Peter & The Blizzards – Sittin’ in my room (3A 1966 ***)

Band from The Hague. Singer Peter Hollestelle is the brother of Dutch singer Conny van den Bos, who made 2 fine singles (**) in Dutch (Ik ben gelukkig zonder jou + Paleis met gouden muren).

14 Selfkick – Gosh! I'm your woman, not your wife (1A 1966 ***)

The Dutch Pretty Things from Velsen/Beverwijk. Once in a while they accompanied, how obvious, Dutch action poet Johnny the Selfkicker
(real name Johnny van Doorn).

15 Softs – Kassie kijken (1A 1966 ****)

In English ‘Watching the telly’. ‘Paarse broek’ (Purple trousers) is great as well (1B ***). This band from Amsterdam started as Softenons, after the infamous medicine that caused a lot of trouble.

16 Sparklings – Now it's your turn to cry (2B 1966 ***)

Band from Amsterdam. In 1967 Ben Cramer went solo. He had a couple of hits (Zai zai zai, Dans met mij, De clown) and in 1973 he represented NL at the Eurovision song contest with ‘De oude muzikant’.

17 Zipps – Kicks and chicks (2A 1966 ****)

Band from Dordrecht, province Zuid-Holland. One of the few real underground groups, complete with Zeta lightshow. We included theirfamous sticker ‘be stoned! dig: Zipps psychedelic sound’ with our single PLUT 004.

18 4PK – Down and out (3A 1966 ***)

Band from Eindhoven. This is a freakbeat classic. Pronounce Vier PK (Four PK). PK = Peter Koelewijn. This was in fact Peter & Zijn RocketsdoingEnglish Nederbeat instead of Dutch rock and roll.

19 Adjéèf The Poet – Iekk! I'm a.... freak (1A 1967 ***)

#3 in the all-time Top 50 of freakbeat records in Mojo (2001).
Ad J. F. (Ad jé èf) Visser from Amsterdam became a wellknown radio-dj (Superclean dream machine) and tv-host (AVRO’s Toppop). He wrote a song with 1050 verses that lasted 8 hours + 42 minutes!

20 Fallouts – I’m sick of living #1 (- 1967 ***)

Band from Valkenswaard, province Noord-Brabant. This 1stversion, recorded for an unreleased LP (but released soon!),is superior to the 2ndversion ontheir 2nd single. The picture to the left comes from You Tube / Fallouts.

21 Q 65 – From above(4A 1967 *****)

#18 in the all-time Top 50 of freakbeat records in Mojo (2001).
This band from The Hague is the best Nederbeat band for me. No less than 10 songs have 3 or more stars in my iTunes library, but I decided to include only 2 of them on ‘60 Dutch Nuggets’. The dropped8 songs: …

22 Q 65 – It came to me (5B 1967 *****)

… You’re the victor (1A ***), And you’re kind (1B ***), The life I live (2A *****), Cry in the night (2B ***), I despise you (3A ****), Ann (3B with piano intro ***;the song was also recorded witha guitar intro!**), Down in the bottom (1stLP *****) and World of birds (5A ****).

23 Bonny St. Claire – Tame me tiger (1A 1967 ****)

Written by Peter Koelewijn and recordedwith Belgian session men. Cornelia Swart from Rozenburg, province Zuid-Holland, had 3 Top 5 hits:solo ‘I won’t stand between them’ (#5 1970) andwith Unit Gloria ‘Clap your hands and stamp your feet’ (#3 1972) and ‘Waikiki man’ (#4 1973).

24 Weetjewel – Lila lovin' Lola (1A 1967 ****)

Band from Hilversum. Kinks fans will love this song. The music is based on ‘Sittin’ on my sofa’, the text is already about a Lola and the singer sounds more like Ray Davies than Ray Davies himself, especiallywhen he sings the line ‘Now’s the time to prove that I’m a super sexy fella indeed’.

25 Dragonfly – Celestial dreams (1A 1968 *****)

Band from Vlissingen, province Zeeland. Excellent psychedelica with a great guitar by Rudy de Queljoe (later in Island and Brainbox). Long before Kiss they performed with painted faces.

26 Groep 1850 – Zero (4A 1968 ***)

Intro: One – Eight – Five – Zero(1-8-5-0).
The Dutch Mothers Of Invention from The Hague were formed when The Klits (after clitoris) decided to change their name on 1-1-1967.

27 Bintangs – Ridin' on the L&N (7A 1969 ****)

The Bintangs (the Malaysian word for Stars) started in 1961 as an indorock-band in Ventures style. Later they became the Dutch Rolling Stones. (o) Don Burley (1946 with composer Lionel Hampton on vibraphone).

28 Brainbox – Down man (1A 1969 ****)

Supergroup from Amsterdam with Holland’s best singer (Kaz Lux) and guitar player (Jan Akkerman)?

29 Shocking Blue – Long and lonesome road (4A 1969 ***)

Other great song: ‘Send me a postcard’ (3A ***, the first one with Mariska Veres). Their ‘Venus’ (5A **) is probably the most famous song that was recorded in NL. It reached #1 everywhere, except in NL (#3in 1969 andagain #3 in 1970).

30 Earth & Fire – Seasons (1A 1969 ****)

Seasons was written by George Kooymans of The Golden Earrings. Before this 1stsingle Manuela Berloth (who had made a solo single in 1967 as Lysett) had been replaced by Jerney Kaagman. Great singles band. The following singles 2-6 all have ** in my iTunes.

CD2

01 Sandy Coast – Subject of my thoughts (2A 1965 *****)

For me (and blog owner José) this is the best Nederbeat song.Band from Voorburg, province Zuid-Holland. Their most successful period was 1971-1972 with hits like ‘True love that’s a wonder’ (#3 1971), ‘Just a friend’ (#11 1971) and‘Summertrain’ (#6 1972).

02 Stylets – Come to me (1A recorded 1964, released 2007 ***)

Band from Roosendaal, province Noord-Brabant. The only song on ‘60 Dutch Nuggets’ that was recorded in 1964 and the only release from our own label (PLUT 008).

03 Haigs – Never die (1A 1965 ****)

Another great song is ‘From now on’ (3A ***).

In 1967 singer Barry Hay turned down an offer by Robbie van Leeuwen to join Shocking Blue (they even wrote a couple of songs together). He went to The Golden Earrings instead.

04 Motions – For another man(3A 1965 *****)

Number 3 in my personal Top 10. Other great Motions songs:
You bother me (2A ***), Love won’t stop (4A ***), Be the woman I need (1st LP ***) and Everything (that’s mine) (7B ***).

Their 1st LP INTRODUCTION TO THE MOTIONS is a must-have.

05 Nicky & The Shouts – It's time (1B 1965 ***)

Band from Groningen. Style: Hollies, Searchers.

06 Phantoms – Tormented (3A and 4A 1965 ****)

Band from Eindhoven. The 3rd single had Kinks-cover
‘A well respected man’ on the b-side, the 4th single had b-side ‘Someday I’m somebody’ (inspired by ‘Everybody needs somebody to love’ of Solomon Burke).

07 Sound Magics – Don’t you remember (2A 1965 ***)

Band from Doesburg/Arnhem. In 1967 they changed their name to Moan (not to be confused with The Moans from Arnhem, the band of Herman Brood before he went to Cuby+Blizzards).

08 Thunders – Take me the way I am (1A 1965 ****)

Band from Montfort, province Limburg. Singer Piet Zeelen was blind. The b-side ‘Johnny’s back’ (the label says ‘Johnny’s back in town’) is an answer-song to Chuck Berry’s ‘Johnny B. Goode’.

09 Beat Buddies – Pins in my heart (2B 1966 ****)

Written by Peter Koelewijn. Great fuzzy guitar. Band from Amsterdam. In 1968 the rhythm section went to The Millionaires and their single ‘I could cry’ was also written by Peter Koelewijn.

10 Bumble Bees – A girl of my kind (- 1966 ****)

I like the version withouttrumpets on the b-side of their planned, advertised, but unreleased single ‘I was blind’ better than the version with trumpets on the b-side of their 2nd single ‘Maybe someday’

11 Hu & The Hilltops – I need your lovin' (1B 1966 ****)

Fantastic 12-string guitar. Singer Hans van der Toorn got his nick name after acting as monster Hu in a horror film of his uncle. In 1967 he went solo as Ralph Anderson (2 solo singles in 1968).

12 Interpreters – Any time (1A 1966 ***)

Band from Heerlen, province Limburg. In 1967 they changed their name to Py-Set and were joined by Ferdinand Bakker (later in Alquin).

They were successful in Japan as The Goldfingers.

14 Tony Light – Laat me gaan (2A 1966 ****)

In English ‘Let me go’. You probably have never heard this song before, but I just love that ‘Needles and pins’ guitar. The song has exactly the same backing track that was used on the original: Michael Holm - Laß mich geh’n (1966)

15 Midnatt Fyran – When you're lonesome (2A 1966 ***)

Midnatt Fyran is Midnight Four in Swedish. There 1st single contained 2 covers by Swedish band Lenne & The Lee Kings

Band from The Hague. The Dutch Small Faces. A-side ‘Lady Bountiful’ contains Steve Marriot’s favourite line ‘come on children’.

27 BZN – Maybe someday (1A 1968 ****)

BZN=Band Zonder Naam=Band without a name, from Volendam.
Until ‘70 a beat band, then a rock band, butwhen they started to use girl singers in ’75 they became one of the worst (and thus most successful) Dutch bands ever.

28 Christie – (I) Walk away Renee (2B 1968 ***)
